EnDev Innovation Window: Unlocking Smallholder Productivity through Solar powered equipment and AI-Driven Advisory Services

About this project

Smallholder farmers in Sierra Leone form the backbone of local food security and rural livelihoods but face persistent barriers that limit productivity and income. Many lack access to affordable and reliable energy for irrigation, cold storage and processing, leading to high post-harvest losses and limited market opportunities. Existing solar-productive use appliances and Pay as You Go (PAYGo) models have seen success with small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) but have not yet unlocked widespread adoption among smallholder farmers, who need solutions that provide practical support beyond hardware alone. The project aims to address this gap by piloting a solution that bundles solar-powered power usage effectiveness (PUE) with AI-driven agri-advisory and market information services. By combining flexible financing, leveraging cooperative structures and tailored digital extension, the project will test whether a more holistic approach can improve farmers’ incomes, reduce spoilage and strengthen resilience to climate and market shocks.
