About this project

This project aims to strengthen climate resilience and improve income levels for farmers in the Guinope cluster, Honduras. Farmers face significant challenges due to climate change and low earnings. The local impact assessment revealed several root causes: Climate variability, such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and heatwaves. This negatively affects coffee plots and crop productivity. In addition, the adoption rate of regenerative agricultural practices is limited. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions from fertiliser use and residue management remain high. And last but not least: most farmers do not earn a living income. These findings highlight the urgent need for holistic interventions that address both environmental and economic vulnerabilities. To achieve this, the project will focus on building sustainable farming systems through targeted actions. Training 200 farmers in regenerative agricultural practices will be a cornerstone, covering soil management, organic composting, and water management. Learning will be reinforced through farmer field schools, encouraging peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and practical demonstrations. Coffee farms will be rejuvenated with new seedlings, and shade trees will be planted to improve climate adaptation and crop resilience. Diversifying production by increasing vegetable cultivation will enhance household nutrition, food security additional income, while introducing beekeeping offers an innovative income stream.
