About this project

Indonesia ranked fourth in the world as a coffee grower and exporter, with Sumatra Island accounting for more than half of the producing areas. Most coffee farmers barely earn the sufficient income required to have a decent standard of living for all family members. As a result, coffee production is tied to deforestation: having low productivity, many coffee farmers resort to turning rainforests into cropland, taking advantage of soil fertility on those areas. With coffee production in Indonesia anticipated to decline due to climate change, these forests are at risk of being deforested even more to expand coffee farms. The project goal is to advocate responsible production of coffee in areas that are critical to biodiversity, while also promoting gender equality across responsible business practices. This is to be achieved by building capacities for coffee actors (government, companies, farmers) to reduce deforestation and protect biodiversity, promoting an inclusive and gender equal coffee supply chain aimed at improving livelihoods, and strengthening resilience against climate change impacts among coffee farming families. The project will build narratives that provide holistic multidimensional root causes for deforestation and show how a more sustainable model of landscape and community projects has the power to reduce deforestation.Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD), is a process by which companies identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for human rights…
