About this project

Bundibugyo District, is one of the largest producers of cocoa beans in Uganda (70%). Most of the cocoa farmers in this region depend on cocoa crop as the main source of income. Currently, farmers are facing difficulties in maintaining their system of production. Traditional farming practices and lack of technical knowledge and tools to implement good agricultural practices are leading to decrease productivity and consequently, vulnerate the source of income. This situation is exacerbated by the progressive soil degradation and extreme weather conditions caused by climate change. The main goal of the project is to promote the implementation of agroforestry systems and increase farmers skills to transform the current production system into a climate resilient one. Agroforestry implementation will tackle deforestation impacts and reduce soil erosion. Forest tree species selected are African species, which will promote local biodiversity and reduce carbon footprint in the cocoa supply chain.Agroforestry system and practices, linked to good agricultural techniques will control soil erosion leading to increase cocoa productivity, giving a more secure family income, using local resources and environmentally friendly practices able to protect soil and water sources and transforming the cocoa production system into a sustainable agroforestry system, a climate resilient livelihood.
