About this project

This project aims to establish an Forest Stewartship Council (FSC) group certification system for forest communities in Suriname to enable them to sustainably manage and market their forest products, mainly timber. Many of these communities depend on timber harvesting for their livelihoods but face significant challenges in accessing high-end international markets due to a lack of certification, technical knowledge, and financial resources. The project builds on the SUStainable Timber SurinAME (SUSTAME) project results and ongoing activities (likely to run until May 2026), in which capacity-building support on sustainable forest management is organised, as well as certification requirements for forest communities. This project will build on these results by identifying, training and supporting a dedicated group manager to oversee FSC group certification, set up a group structure, and facilitate implementation.By establishing a structured and sustainable FSC group certification model, the project aligns with responsible production, climate goals, and sustainable economic development in Suriname.
