About this project
The poultry sector in Kinshasa currently depends heavily on imports, lacking the local infrastructure needed for sustainable egg and meat production. As a country with over 20 million inhabitants, the province presents a massive untapped market opportunity for local food systems. The "Congo Kinshasa Poultry Partners" project addresses this challenge by establishing a parent stock farm, hatchery, and feed mill, aiming to produce 5 million day-old chicks annually by 2025. The project uses the African Poultry Multiplication Initiative (APMI) model - a tested model proven to be successful in 13 other African countries - whereby dual-purpose chickens are raised in "mother units" run by trained entrepreneurs, and then sold to smallholders for further meat and egg production. This pilot phase will benefit up to 700 mother unit farmers in 2025 and 7000 smallholders and 110 direct jobs, while indirectly improving food access for millions of consumers. The project also prioritises women and youth employment and promotes a circular local economy by integrating feed crop production with partners such as Caritas and RENAFER.If successful, this initiative will serve as a model for replication in other Congolese regions, contributing to SDG 1 (Poverty abatement), SDG 2 (Food nutrition and security, sustainable agriculture), and SDG 8 (Inclusive and sustainable economic growth).
