About this project

The project aims to improve the farming practices of organic pineapple growers in Benin, leading to better working conditions, improved income, and resilient farming ecosystems. Benin is Africa’s fourth largest exporter of pineapple. Almost 80% of the active players in the supply chain are female, and it’s a primary source of employment, export income, raw materials for industry and food for the local population. However, the potential of the pineapple sector in Benin is largely underexploited. Farming techniques are often rather archaic, and farmers have little access to adequate knowledge and input. These circumstances leave farmers with a multitude of everyday challenges, including low yields per hectare, tough working conditions, high production costs and an unsustainable farming system that is prone to environmental shocks and climate change. During recent years, pineapple harvests have severely been harmed by droughts. This Impact Cluster focuses on sustainable pineapple production in Benin, leveraging Dynamic Agroforestry (DAF) and blended learning tools to improve farming practices, resilience, and livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Over 1,600 farmers, organised under the cooperative RePAB, will be trained in climate-resilient, diversified production systems. 190 demonstration plots will be established to showcase best practices. The project will also strengthen RePAB governance, introduce sustainability certifications, and improve access to premium markets. Jus Del…
