Increased nutrition security by professionalisation of the cassava value chain

About this project

This Impact Cluster aims to professionalise Mozambique’s cassava value chain and strengthen nutrition security by introducing proven Dutch technologies, digital tools and standards into a fragile but highly promising sector. Cassava is Mozambique’s main staple, yet productivity is low, processing is largely artisanal, and industrial capacity is constrained by technological bottlenecks.The consortium combines complementary expertise: JK Techniek and TOP (NL) bring engineering solutions to resolve Dadtco Mandioca Mocambique LDA's (DMM’s) drying bottleneck (tripling capacity from 450 to 1,500 kg/hour) and valorise cassava by-products into animal feed. SmartFarming introduces open-source digital farmer registration and monitoring systems, enabling traceability and certification readiness. Instituto De Investigacão Agrária De Mocambique (IIAM) and Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) contribute cassava variety screening, multiplication, and the development of national starch product and process standards, while Casmara (SA) ensures market linkage and certification for South African buyers.
