About this project

Supporting the smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe is one of Netherlands’ priority areas for development cooperation in Zimbabwe. Support to the spice value chains in Mwenezi is a game changer in a semi-arid region. It provides farmers with alternative cash crops that have a guaranteed export market and can add jobs for women employed at various stages across these value chains. The absence of food certification and traceability have been the key missing link to unlock access to regional and global paprika and sesame markets. Food safety certification provides proof that the product is safe to use, and it warrants that any business holding this credential has met professional and ethical standards. This project therefore serves to strengthen the recognition and traceability of spices produced by smallholder farmers in Mwenezi district through training in supplier quality assurance and certification.
