About this project
Emerging farmers in the Letaba River Catchment area largely depend for irrigation on river flows and rainfall. However, the water system in the area is under pressure with rivers running dry and ground water levels going down. Climate change will put further stress on the area’s water availability. As a result, these farmers face challenges related to water availability and access, impacting their livelihoods and agricultural practices. The purpose of this project is to pilot the promotion of sustainable and commercial-oriented farming in the Kruger-to-Canyon Biosphere Reserve in South Africa by enabling a first group of emerging farmers in this area to efficiently use of and share the available water resources through the application of digital tools. Furthermore, the longer-term purpose of this project is to scale up the application of digital tools for efficient water use to emerging farmers in other parts of South Africa.
