About this project
Global horticultural trade is undergoing a significant, structural shift from air to sea freight, driven by cost pressures, the need to reduce carbon footprints and stricter sustainability requirements from buyers in key destination markets. In line with this trend, Ethiopia is also aiming to make this transition. The results of the limited number of pilot reefer shipments from Ethiopia have however been mixed and sea freight challenges persist including suboptimal packing and loading practices, delays in customs clearance and frequent and time-consuming transshipments. The purpose of this project is to improve the understanding and practices in the horticulture sector in Ethiopia on how to effectively organise export reefer shipments for horticulture products by sea freight.
