About this project
Traditional dyers of clothing stubs (called 'bazin' in Mali) are an important source of income for many families in Mali and are generally organised by women. These dyers are located in many places randomly throughout the city, but what they all have in common is that they have a lot of waste water produce. These dye works contribute to the pollution of surface water by discharging polluted water in canals, streams and the Niger River in Bamako. The majority of these dyers are small-scale businesses in a shared courtyard or garden, without wastewater disposal capabilities. The water is therefore fed directly into the network of narrow channels discharged at the side of the road (Bamako has no sewage network). This network of small channels eventually discharges into the Niger River. The production of the bazin cloths uses a mix of chemicals uses that are harmful to the health of women during the production process without them often know about this. In addition, there is currently no working system for the polluted water to be collected and taken to a treatment facility.By setting up a pilot for collection, transport and purification of waste water from teintureries at ANGESEM, the National Agency for the Management of Water Purification in Bamako, the project will contribute to:1) Reducing surface water pollution in the Niger to protect the ecosystem and biodiversity;2) A more sustainable and healthy dyeing sector; and 3) Stimulating entrepreneurship related to water purific…
