AquaCarbon project Ghana

About this project

In Ghana, more than 5.5 million people lack access to safe drinking water .The AquaCarbon-project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of BAR for rural water supply and the sustainability of the financing model based on carbon credits.Element15's BAR filtration systems will provide the technology to provide clean drinking water. In this way, the water coming from the borehole, which now contains large amounts of bacteria, will be safe for human consumption. Climate Focus will support in certifying the project for carbon credits, so that a sustainable financing model is generated to cover operational expenses. A local organisation will be responsible for engaging with and involving the local community. The activities in the demonstration project are divided in two main element:s providing safe drinking water through BAR and certifying the project for carbon credits. To provide safe water, the BAR filtration systems will be retrofitted to 65 hand pumps, the systems will be maintained and repaired when needed, and periodic water quality tests will be performed. For carbon credit certification, an initial assessment of the potential is carried out after which the required documentation will be drafted for certification.
