About this project

Re-creating climate change resilient agro-forestry systems for 15,000 smallholder farmers. The development of agro-forestry will allow local farmers to become active in the value chain by replanting various trees and food crops. The trees Cinchona, cloves, cinnamon and ginger will be used as commodities.Besides these trees used as commodities, the project will realise/reintroduce various native tree species to enrich the biodiversity. This project can demonstrate how alternative agriculture development can stop deforestation and create sustainable and climate-resilient food production systems and contribute to create green corridors. The green corridors are foreseen to protect and strengthen the unique biodiversity by realising connections between the national parcs. This project will set up a canopy layer consisting of high trees being Cinchona trees and cloves (higher than 5 meter) and, smaller trees (between 2 and 5 meter) being Cinnamon trees and fruit trees and ground cover crops (maize, groundnuts) and bushes (0-2 meter). The selected and applied trees are common in Madagascar and existed until 2-3 decades ago and still can be found in some well-preserved areas. The selected mixture of trees will improve the biodiversity as well as improve the water availability of the surroundings and will result in sustainable incomes for the farmers and the involvement of farmers to maintain their natural resources.
