About this project
The initiative led by Sucafina, JDE Peet’s, CARE Indonesia, and CARE Netherlands is set to address social sustainability challenges within Java's coffee supply chain, with a strong focus on improving working conditions, enhancing financial stability, and boosting the involvement of women and youth.Beginning with a comprehensive baseline study, the project seeks to grasp the local context through direct engagement with coffee farmers, cooperatives, intermediaries, and grassroots organisations. This essential groundwork enables the development of an inclusive action plan through collaborative workshops involving key stakeholders such as local government officials, coffee cooperatives, community leaders, and representatives from both coffee farmer groups and women & youth coffee farmer groups. These collaborative efforts lead to the co-creation of an action plan. The action plan will focus on the following social sustainability risks:1. Lack of meaningful participation of women and youth in the value-chain, like the set up of women & youth Voluntary Saving an Loan Associations (VSLA's), gender responsive grievance mechanisms, capacity building one women leadership, et cetera. 2. Poor working conditions like, the development of localised Standard Operating Procedures, guidelines on the workers’ rights & benefits, legal hiring practices and operational health and safety.3. Gap in living wage and income, like a regenerative agricultural approach & diversification strategies.
