About this project
Mozambique is experiencing a large-scale flood emergency triggered by persistent and intense rainfall since late December 2025. The Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) has been supporting the Government activation of anticipatory actions with evacuations, distribution of relief items, and dissemination of early warning messages. This was done through the activation of the Floods Early Action Protocol (EAP) and other mechanisms. Despite these efforts, the scope and scale of the emergency has exceeded local capacities and on 16 January 2026, the Government of Mozambique activated a nationwide Red Alert, in response to the deterioration of weather conditions and the heightened risk of severe flooding and related hazards across the country. As of 27 January 2026, official data from INGD indicate that over 690'000 people (150'000 households) have been affected nationwide by the floods. More than 100,000 people are living in over temporary accommodation centres. The provinces most severely affected are Gaza, Sofala and Zambézia, with significant impacts also reported in Maputo, Inhambane, Manica and Tete.
