About this project

Bangladesh is one of the frontline victims of climate change. It is exposed to rapid and slow onset climate change impacts like increased intensified floods, cyclones, droughts, riverbank erosion, heat waves, erratic rainfall, and salinity intrusions. The frequent impact of these hazards is affecting food security, water availability, human health, and livelihoods leading to unprecedented displacement, poverty and casualties. Moreover, Bangladesh's Ecologically Critical Areas (ECA), which are rich in biodiversity, are becoming more vulnerable due to the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Communities depending on natural resources often remain the most susceptible to climate change. Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, is one of the ECAs which plays a crucial role in protecting lives and livelihoods on the country's southwest coast. With a population of over 4 million and a rich habitat with rare species, including tigers, the Sundarbans' inhabitants are threatened by climate changes due to rising sea levels and frequent cyclones. Over-extraction of forest resources by locals and industrial development in the nearby areas is currently threatening this World Heritage Site. Another ECA at risk is the Hakaluki Haor in northeast Bangladesh, which is part of a complex wetland system of the Meghna-Surma River basin. Hakaluki Haor is one of the most extensive marsh wetlands in the country, inhabited by over 200,000 people and 558 animal and bird…
