About this project
Cox's Bazar is one of the poorest districts in Bangladesh (BBS 2017) with the local economy heavily dependent on traditional industries like fishing and agriculture. Lack of infrastructural development hindered industrialization impacting economic progress (World Bank, 2020). The arrival of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) in 2017 severely impacted the local economy and livelihoods of the host community, and increased living costs as competition for jobs, and resources increased (World Bank, 2019). Along with the economic challenges, women in the host communities also face challenges related to insecurity, limited mobility, lack of income opportunities, increased domestic violence, marital instability, polygamy, sexual harassment, exploitation, and discrimination by service providers due to decreased access to services (GIHA WG, 2022). These challenges affect the well-being, dignity, and rights of women in Cox's Bazar host community.
