About this project

Bangladesh’s agriculture sector, employing over 40 percent of the workforce and contributing 12.5 percent to GDP, is under severe pressure from climate change. In the coastal belt, home to 38 million people, rising salinity, tidal flooding, and cyclones are steadily eroding the viability of open-field farming. By 2050, the World Bank estimates that up to one-third of the country’s agricultural GDP could be lost. While adaptive interventions such as saline-tolerant crops have shown promise, they remain vulnerable to sudden weather shocks and pests, leaving smallholders with unstable incomes and food insecurity. Protected horticulture offers a proven pathway to resilience. Low-cost polyhouses shield crops from climate stress, enable year- round cultivation, and allow farmers to achieve higher yields and profitability. Yet adoption in Bangladesh remains limited to fewer than 2,000 active units, with less than five percent penetration in coastal areas where the need is greatest. High upfront investment costs, limited access to finance, weak technical knowledge, and fragile market linkages continue to constrain uptake. The slow uptake of protected horticulture is driven by several structural barriers. Farmers face high upfront investment costs and limited access to affordable finance, which prevents smallholders from purchasing polyhouse structures or high-value seeds. Technical knowledge of controlled farming is low, and the availability of suitable construction materials and in…
