About this project
This consortium will combat deforestation and illegal resource extraction with coordinated advocacy and policy reform. Led by Fern, the consortium comprises national civil society organisations in Ghana (Civic Response/Ecocare), Côte d’Ivoire (IDEF), Cameroon (CED), Liberia (SDI/FCI), Vietnam (SRD) and Republic of Congo (RPDH/OCDH); it is supported by investigative NGO Earthsight and other technical organisations, e.g., Well Grounded/Terra Mucho (Congo Basin); Voice network (cocoa); Afrewatch (DRC mining). National partners will build advocacy platforms, participate in legal reform processes, monitor illegal activities, and support community rights. Earthsight will conduct investigations to strengthen advocacy efforts. Fern will engage European policymakers to advance sustainable policies. Key regulatory targets include the EU Battery Regulation, Critical Raw Materials Act and EUDR. We will scope relevant levers in gold-consuming regions, particularly Switzerland/UK. The team will influence EU-producer country trade partnerships, ensuring sufficient European funding for this, and stimulate international discussions on rules-based trade of forest risk commodities
