About this project
NIVA and the Indian partners will focus on building the capacity of the government agencies such as the pollution control boards, private sector and NGOs in India to monitor, analyse and devise measures to prevent plastic and chemical pollution, through a circular economy approach. The main topics and results from the India Norway Capacity Building Programme for reducing Plastic and Chemical Polluton in India (INOPOL) align closely with India’s aims to combat marine litter. NIVA would continue the work and consolidate the gains from INOPOL by developing knowledge-based measures through a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach that supports the transition towards a circular economy in India. While INOPOL foused on Gujarat, the new phase would focus on Tamil Nadu. The project would support the monitoring of micro and macro plastics in a riverine environment and provide baseline data as input to the drafting of a State Action Plan on Plastic Pollution in one of the State. The project would carry out a pilot study on agricultural plastics and potential reduction measures in the selected state with private sector collaboration.
