About this project

INDEE3 - Sustainable Cooling and Heating in India will advance decarbonisation and environmentally friendly technologies in India's heating and cooling sectors, aligning with India’s international commitments under the Kigali Amendment. It will build on the completed INDEE+ project, and promote increased use of natural refrigerants and lifecycle refrigerant management in existing infrastructure. Research indicates that India's current refrigerant usage poses significant environmental challenges. Many systems still rely on refrigerants with high global warming potential, as the country transitions away from ozone-depleting substances. There are two potential paths for India's refrigeration industry: the first is a continuation of the current practices, where harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) replace older refrigerants. While this transition is legally permissible due to India's extended timeline for compliance under the Kigali Amendment, it does little to mitigate climate change impacts. Alternatively, the Indian industry can leapfrog to advanced refrigeration technologies with natural refrigerants. The project will focus on sectors like seafood, food processing and buildings. It will educate researchers and industry professionals in India, fostering knowledge transfer and capacity building. It will establish business collaborations between Norwegian and Indian companies in these sectors. SINTEF-Ocean will be the agreement partner with the Embassy, while there will be 11 more…
