About this project
Phase II support to Centre for Science & Environment under the India-Norway Marine Pollution Initiative. The phase II is designed to target the major sources of marine pollution such as mismanaged solid waste, plastic fishing gear, waste from coastal tourism and ship movements and industrial activities. The project will build learning and knowledge sharing platforms with urban local bodies from across India (Forum of Cities) on policy, regulations, and sharing good practices sustainable management of municipal solid wastes, plastics and marine litter. The project will engage also with the larger policy and regulatory landscape that is rapidly evolving, including the circular economy approach to the management of plastics and municipal waste. In order to showcase proof-of concepts (‘model cities’), the project will also intensively engage directly with two coastal/riverine cities to strengthen systems, processes on: efficient plastics waste management and replicable measures to prevent plastic leakage, and sustainable and efficient practices regarding disposal of discarded fishing gear. This phase of the project will leverage the learning from India and the global south to engage with the ongoing global plastic treaty dialogue to better represent Southern perspectives on circularity, just transition, financing and impacts on human health, among many relevant concerns.
