About this project

The project is a response to the NICFI 2026 - 2028 call for proposals: It addresses NICFI’s Strategic Area 2: Improved rights and livelihoods for Indigenous Peoples and local communities in tropical forest countries. A significant share of the world’s tropical forests is managed by Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and forest dependent communities. In Indonesia, IPs manage around 40% of the country’s forests, underscoring their vital role as guardians. The project supports Indigenous communities in articulating and implementing their visions for territorial security, well-being, and forest management through culturally grounded, bottom-up processes. The project aims to reinforce Indigenous governance institutions, enhance forest protection, and contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation while upholding Indigenous rights.
