About this project

Summary: Technical and institutional support to the climate risk work within the Risk Office (Gabinete de Auditoria e Risco) of Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM), to assess and reduce climate risk impacts to electricity infrastructure in Mozambique. Context: Mozambique is the world's second most climate affected country. as manifiested by cyclones Idaí and Kenneth. EDM owns and maintains the power grid in Mozambique, which is old and many places has fallen into disrepair. There is acute need to build back better, both exisiting and new transmission and distrbution infrastructure - including substations - to increase climate adaptation and resilience, Rapidly changing climate dictates new codes for physical resilience of buildings and equipment, to withstand impacts such as floods and cyclones. Mozambique is a hydropower nation, with more than 60% hydropower notably Cahora Bassa and a number of smaller hydropower plants. These are increasingly subject to changes in hydrology due to extreme drought and precipitation events. This poses physical and an economic risks to EDM and to the population of Mozambique, which heavily rely on hydropower dams for electricity and for basin regulation. Competence on hydrology within EDM is limited. Mozambique is the 13th least prepared country for the effects of climate change. Background: In 2021, Electricidade de Mocambique, with support of the Swedish Embassy, established a Risk Office with the responsibility for assessing, overseeing diff…
