About this project

Indonesia Addresses the environmental and social risks linked to the global shift away from fossil fuels in transport. While decarbonisation is essential to mitigate climate change, increasing demand for biofuels and energy transition minerals (ETMs) risks driving deforestation, biodiversity loss and violations of the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs). The overall objective is to ensure that the transport energy transition is sustainable, deforestation-free and grounded in respect for human rights. This includes reducing reliance on harmful crop-based biofuels, promoting responsible extraction of ETMs, strengthening corporate accountability and safeguarding civic space for affected communities. The programme is led by a consortium of civil society organisations from Europe, Brazil and Indonesia. Key recipient countries are Brazil and Indonesia, where biofuel expansion and mineral extraction pose significant threats to tropical forests and local communities. In Europe, the consortium will work to defend and improve regulatory safeguards, ensuring that relevant policies such as the Renewable Energy Directive, ReFuel EU, FuelEU Maritime, EU Deforestation Regulation and Batteries Regulation are effectively implemented and enforced.
