About this project

This phase3, which is a continuation of phase 1 and 2, aims to synergise and streamline with past and ongoing initiatives, connecting the aforementioned pilots, studies and advancements to continue addressing the challenges posed by domestic solid wastes (DSW) generation and management of non-recyclable wastes, through further contextualising models for waste recovery and recycling, whilst strengthening the enabling policy and regulatory environment to do so. The project is therefore structured around three key outcomes: (i) establishing an effective DSW management model that enables the recovery of high- and low-value waste streams through improved policies, guidelines, sorting infrastructure, and a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for the diversion of non-recyclables, including low-value plastic waste, from landfill to recycling or recovery end-markets (i.e., co-processing); (ii) design testing of a scalable and contextualised DRS model in Viet Nam to incentivize waste segregation, collection and recycling; and (iii) enhancing national policy frameworks, knowledge dissemination, and monitoring systems to drive scalable and holistic sustainable waste management. The project supports the informal waste workers, most of whom are women, and advocate for policies that include these poor and informal female workers in the waste value chain and support them so that they are not marginalized when the new regulations are in place.
