About this project
The project aims to provide sustainable energy with a particular focus on the poor and other vulnerable groups in Zanzibar. The project will address major challenges such as high reliance on electricity imports from mainland Tanzania, increasing energy demand driven by population growth and economic development, high technical and commercial losses in the power distribution systems, high cost of grid connection for households and businesses, limited awareness of available options for energy efficiency, high dependence on unsustainable biomass fuels for cooking and high cost of clean cooking solutions. By focusing on renewable energy integration, clean cooking adoption, ZECO performance improvement, and energy efficiency in tourism, the interventions are well-aligned with the sector’s needs. The inclusion of feasibility studies, capacity building, and awareness campaigns ensures both technical and social sustainability. Moreover, the project complements existing initiatives and national priorities, enhancing its relevance and potential impact. The proposed solutions in the project document address the key challenges. Overall, the solutions are comprehensive and strategically designed to tackle the identified problems effectively within the Zanzibar context. Components such as energy planning, efficient cookstoves, liquefied petroleum gas rollout, and energy efficiency in tourism contribute to reducing emissions, improving health, and strengthening energy security.
