Gridworks Mbale - Bulambuli - Kween Transmission Project - Uganda

About this project

The Mbale-Bulambuli-Kween project consists in the construction of the high voltage transmission line and related substations to reinforce the grid in Eastern Uganda. The Norad grant will support the development of of the project towards financial close (including legal, technical, financial, and E&S studies). The project was devised and conceptualised by Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) and has been integrated in the 2018-2040 Grid Development Plan. The purpose of the project is to eliminate transmission bottlenecks in Eastern Uganda and to facilitate evacuation of about 100 MW power from certain existing and planned hydropower plants and a proposed 150 MW Solar PV plant in the region. This will help to supply the wider project areas as well as enhancing system reliability, availability, and quality of power supply. The Project will be important to demonstrate the viability of greenfield Independent Power Transmission (IPT) projects, as an asset class and to catalyse further private capital in the sector to help plug the gap on the investment need.
