About this project
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has suffered catastrophic damage due to ongoing military aggression, leaving hospitals, schools, and entire cities vulnerable to power and heating outages. More than half of generation capacity was lost. In response, UNDP and Norway are investing over $193 million USD in the rapid deployment of 148 MW and installation of additional 108 MW co-generation units, solar systems, and energy storage solutions across high-need regions such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. These interventions will: • Restore and secure heating and water supply for over 4 million people, including vulnerable populations in frontline cities; • Support hospitals and water utilities with solar and backup battery systems to maintain life-saving services during outages, brining 20 MW of renewable energy over 3 years and reducing CO2 emission by 20%; • Improve energy efficiency in wastewater infrastructure to lower municipal costs by 40% and saving 100,000 tCO2e annually; • Establish decentralized, flexible power systems to better withstand future attacks or disruptions.
