About this project
Sida supports Wetlands International (WI) and its Wetlands for Resilience (W4R) program, which aims to restore and sustainably manage wetland areas through a holistic landscape approach. This is divided into five work packages with implementation work in three so-called landscapes: in the Sundarbans in Bangladesh; in the Jeta-Pecixe-Cacheu Mangrove Coast in Guinea-Bissau; and in the Ziway-Shalla East African Rift Valley in Ethiopia. Coordination and advocacy work at the global level is coordinated from the office in the Netherlands. The program also draws on experiences from wetland work in India and Indonesia. The overall aim of the program is to ‘scale up’ healthy, well-managed wetland landscapes with biodiversity, thereby contributing to climate resilience and environmental, social, and economic sustainability at the local level. Activities include concrete restoration and sustainable management of wetland areas in Ethiopia and Bangladesh, as well as the development and testing of a W4R model approach: a toolbox and guidance for accelerating the scaling up of other wetland restoration programs.
