About this project

The project "Improving municipal waste management services in North Macedonia 2023-2027", implemented by SALAR is the outcome of a Sida-funded pre-study carried out in North Macedonia between December 2020 and June 2021 to explore options for supporting good governance and sustainable development. The project aims to improve municipal waste management services in North Macedonia with a view to full compliance with EU standards, thus improving environmental sustainability and quality of life for all inhabitants. SALAR's intervention is focusing on building up the waste management planning capacity of municipalities in one of the 5 new waste management regions, with a view to disseminating the results countrywide. SALAR also aims to facilitate coordination and communication between the municipalities, the Association of Units of Local Self-Government (ZELS), the Ministry for Environment and Physical Planning and the Ministry for Local Self-Government. Project implementation will take place in 3 phases or components, the latter two of which will run concurrently: 1. SALAR plans to initially work with a number of pilot municipalities, their public utilities, administration and inhabitants (6 municipalities in the combined Pelagonija and South-West waste management region) to improve waste management planning practices and strengthen their ability to deliver inclusive and sustainable waste management services. 2.
