About this project

The Albanian Air Quality Alignment Project (AQA) is a 20-month intervention that addresses several concluding benchmarks related to air quality management, emissions modelling, and reporting. It constitutes targeted technical assistance to enable alignment with the revised Ambient Air Quality Directive (EU 2024/2881) and the National Emission Ceilings (NEC) Directive (EU 2016/2284). The intervention builds on previous Swedish support through SANE 27 (updating of the national air quality strategy) and ESP (DSIP for the Ambient Air Quality and NEC Directives), as well as on experience gained from the Sida-funded regional project Improving Air Quality in the Western Balkans (2022–2026). The overall objective is for the Government of Albania to adopt decisions on a national air quality assessment system, including zoning, as well as decisions on the data hosting system and the associated budget. This objective will be achieved through the following component-specific secondary objectives: Strengthened capacity within the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) to take decisions on a national assessment system in line with the revised Ambient Air Quality Directive.
