Trellis: Acumen's Climate Resilient Agriculture Initiative

About this project

Trellis is Acumen’s pioneer climate resilient agriculture initiative – a five-year, $25M (~£20M) initiative that will make up to 20-25 investments in early-stage agri-business entrepreneurs across three investment regions in Latin America, West Africa, and East Africa, from 2023 to 2028.Trellis focuses on providing high-risk, early-stage patient capital for pioneering agri-enterprises with a focus on building climate resilience and delivering high-impact solutions to increase productivity and access to markets for smallholder farmers (SHF) globally. Critical to the investments is generating evidence, insights, and impact measurement, contributing to systemic change. Trellis focuses on proving out replicable and scalable business models, including linking these investments to Development Finance Institutions such as BII and more commercial funds to crowd in investment capital to support growth.Through investments in innovative, early-stage agri-businesses, Trellis aims to transform the incomes, livelihoods, and climate resilience of 2M people engaged in agriculture livelihoods. In doing so, the initiative aims to provide replicable examples of business models that drive deep impact to smallholder farmers and their families while also growing financially viable and climate resilient agri-enterprises. This second phase of FCDO funding of £4M to Trellis, to be deployed over four years (1 April 2024 - 31 March 2028) is critical to the initiative as a whole.
