About this project

Highly marginalized, the small-scale fishing (SSF) sector endures persistent vicious circles of poverty and natural resource degradation. Such challenges are exacerbated by climate change effects that damage ecological dynamics and fishing income. SSF are burdened by unfair lender schemes and traditional exclusion to financial services (savings, credit, insurance) hindering the stakeholders’ security and ability to safeguard their families and income-generating capacities in case of adverse events. The initiative “Financial instruments for local resilience to climate and ocean risk: breaking the insurance barrier for vulnerable coastal populations in Colombia” will contribute to enhanced coastal livelihoods and marine fisheries through financial education and promotion of innovative microfinance solutions for climate adaptation and strengthened wellbeing of small-scale fishers. It will be executed in the municipalities of Bahía Solano and Juradó (Chocó), with 85% of Afro-Colombian population, mostly dedicated to fishing. Almost 34% live in multidimensional poverty (US$244/family/month, or US$59/person/month), and 65% evidence Unsatisfied Basic Needs.
