About this project
Coffee and cocoa are the dominant export products from Nicaragua to the European market, collectively accounting for around 50% of the EU's total imports from the country. The EU is a key market in terms of quality and prices: by 2024 EU prices for cocoa were much higher than those in the Central American market. Both coffee and cocoa are produced mainly by small farmers and cooperatives who are highly vulnerable to climate shocks, price fluctuations, and economic volatility. Women often manage post-harvest, processing and marketing activities along these two value chains. However, they face structural barriers accessing resources and technology and rarely have a decision-making role. The proposed action will strengthen the environmental sustainability and inclusiveness of Nicaragua¿s coffee and cocoa sectors, supporting their transition towards a green and resilient economy in line with EU market requirements for sustainable and deforestation-free production. It proposes supporting Nicaragua¿s transition to a green and inclusive economy through the following three components: (i) strengthen digitalisation and traceability systems in line with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) to enhance transparency and export competitiveness, (ii) promote sustainable soil management and circular use of agricultural residues to produce bio-inputs and alternative fertilisers, and (iii) expanding access to renewable energy through off-grid solar systems and efficient cooking…
