About this project
The action responds to Timor-Leste¿s acute climate vulnerability and recurrent food insecurity affecting rural households, particularly during the lean season, by promoting the sustainable development of forestry and agroforestry. It will support the implementation of the National Forest Policy through a Sector Reform Performance Contract (SRPC) providing budget support to the General Directorate for Forestry (DG Forestry) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Fisheries (MALFF). Strengthening the institutional and technical capacity of DG Forestry to effectively fulfil its mandate is expected to enable country-wide sustainable forest management and the expansion of agroforestry systems. The action aims to equip DG Forestry with the capacities required to transform tree planting and forest management into viable and sustainable income-generating activities for rural communities. This includes awareness-raising on forestry as a tool for climate change adaptation and mitigation, strengthening staff technical skills in agroforestry extension and sustainable forest management, improving coordination of forestry initiatives, and enhancing knowledge related to carbon farming, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), and REDD+ requirements to facilitate access to climate finance. Capacity building will be a central pillar of implementation.
