About this project
The Action addresses priority investment needs in the water and sanitation sector in refugee-hosting areas in Northern Uganda. This is necessary due to the significant pressure on public services delivery resulting from the constant influx of refugees, but also increased climate change challenges in form of extreme weather events like longer and more frequent droughts, heavy rains and flooding. A two-pronged approach shall be taken, by responding to long-term needs, contributing to enhancing water supply, household and community sanitation facilities, sustainable storm water / surface drainage infrastructure, and adapted solid waste management (SWM), benefitting both refugees and the Ugandan population. The programme approach will promote operationalising the humanitarian-development Nexus as the responsibility for the development, management and governance of these WASH (including SWM) services is transitioned from humanitarian institutions (e.g. UNHCR) to local stakeholders / state institutions (e.g. Ministry of Water and Environment, private service providers and/or public utilities such as the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, NWSC), thus fostering a longer-term, sustainable approach to basic services in line with the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework, CRRF.
