Post-floods resilient recovery and strengthening of the livestock sector in Balochistan

About this project

The Action intends to restore and strengthen flood disrupted livestock value chains in the whole province of Balochistan with a focus on the most affected communities. The livestock sector in the province has been identified as the main source of income for most of the 12 million population, and the PDNA has clearly highlighted the dramatic impact of the floods in the sector in Balochistan ¿ with damages and losses adding up to USD 2.6 billion, including about 350,000 animals having perished ¿ as well as the need to support the restocking of the herds and the rehabilitation of livestock infrastructures and services.To achieve this objective, restoring the damages of the floods and untapping the full economic potential of the livestock sector by building back better, the Action will provide support for restocking herds and flocks, including reconstructing animal shelter infrastructures impacted by the floods. It will also strengthen livestock market places in the province, improving post production management and facilities towards enhanced quality and value added, including market information systems, as well as enhanced and more sustainable fodder production and access to other necessary livestock inputs. Poultry, the main economic and food security activity of rural women in Balochistan, will be the object of special support, first to recover from the floods and then to boost the contribution of this sub-sector to improved household incomes.
