About this project

<p>Charcoal is a primary source of energy for cooking in Tanzania with 60.6% of urban households using it. Its value chain further provide employment to more than 380,000 people in rural and urban areas. In Dar es Salaam, it is responsible for 50-70% of the national consumption of charcoal. Over 2.3 million tonnes of charcoal were consumed in 2012, and this is expected to double by 2030. Challenges in the charcoal sector are also largely driven by inadequate law enforcement, policy and regulatory capacity, and poor technologies. Over a number of years, a good number of stakeholders have been playing a great role in sustainable forestry management. However, these initiatives have not succeeded in addressing the trio of livelihood options for the rural people, revenue demand and targets by District and Central Government, and sustainability of forest resources.</p><p>The Action will promote inclusive, sustainable forest management and wood fuel production in four rural districts of Morogoro region, and improve the livelihoods of rural women and men through a sustainable wood fuel value chain with more efficient energy supply and increased income-generation opportunities, whilst reducing deforestation and mitigate adverse effects of climate change.</p>
