About this project

The Churo-Kirisia-Mukogodo-Ndoto-Mathews Ranges-Sabarwawa Ecosystem in Northern Kenya covering Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo, Baringo, and Marsabit counties is one of Kenya¿s most critical biodiversity and rangeland ecosystems. The landscape hosts iconic protected areas and more than 40 community conservancies, all of which support a rich diversity of species. It supports over half of Kenya¿s rhino population, the country¿s second-largest elephant population and globally threatened species such as Grevy¿s zebra, cheetah, wild dog, Beisa oryx and lion. Its savannahs, dryland forests and watersheds including the Ewaso Nyiro Northern River basin provide essential ecological goods and services from forage and water to climate regulation and cultural value which sustain local communities and wildlife. Economically, the ecosystems are the backbone of Kenya¿s livestock economy. About 80¿90% of Kenya¿s red meat originates from livestock the region. Thus, pastoralism and nature-based livelihoods remain central to building the resilience of communities and ecosystems. The objective of the action is to enhance the resilience of communities and key ecosystems in Northern Central Kenya by strengthening livelihoods, biodiversity conservation and natural resources governance through the community conservancy model.
