About this project

The Lake Victoria, a critical resource for both the water supply, economy and food supply of the local populations, is subject to quality variations, in part because of the wastewater effluents of its neighbouring cities, and in part as a consequence of the wider anthropic pressure on its basin (deforestation, agriculture, etc.).

It is therefore critical to develop sustainable water and wastewater services in otherwise rapidly growing cities located on the lake banks, to secure the livelihood and improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.

The main objective of the project is to develop water supply services in Mwanza, and sewerage services in Mwanza, Bukoba and Musoma. The LV-WATSAN II will capitalise on the ongoing LV-WATSAN project, already co-funded by AFD and EIB. To maximize implementation efficiency, AFD is planning to finance and supervise the implementation of the project in Musoma and Bukoba, whereas Mwanza, as a target city of the Green and Smart City Sasa Team Europe Initiative, shall benefit from joint co-financing by the EIB and AFD, as well as from the potential EU Grant.
