About this project
Increasing employment by creating value from plastic waste in Bangladesh This project aims to transform the lives of informal waste workers by creating a new market for a stream of plastic waste that currently has no commercial value (SDG 11.6 and 12.5). Working conditions and respect for waste workers will be significantly improved, and new jobs created (SDG 8.3 and SDG 1). With RiverRecycle we will support waste-picker groups in Faridpur to collect single-use polythene from houses, businesses, dumps and rivers, separate and process it into saleable light synthetic fuel oil. There will be oversight and regulation through embedding the system within municipal structures, linking with existing waste processes and with other waste actors. The teaming of commercial and development outcomes will bring new insights and achieve business and social outcomes alike which can be a model for rolling the system out across the country and beyond.
