About this project
The project promotes evidence-based cocoa agroforestry and related climate-smart practices to reduce climate vulnerability and improve livelihoods. It will support and reward 5,000 vulnerable farmers to adopt sustainable, profitable cocoa agroforestry. The project will introduce kilns for farmers to convert organic waste into biochar for soil improvement and unlock climate finance to scale, sustain and reinforce interventions long-term. The project will help supply chain companies to deliver on their science-based carbon reduction commitments and support national efforts to mitigate climate change and improve farmers' income and resilience. This idea responds to the demand of ETG’s customers (global chocolate & confectionary manufacturers) with regard to sustainability, impact delivery and carbon in setting and unlocks a client premium of USD 150-200 per ton client to support farmers with environmental services. Innovative aspects include (1) multidimensional modelling to assess, optimize and monitor complex Cocoa Agroforestry Systems and (2) introduction of biochar kilns among cocoa farmers to convert organic waste for soil improvement and carbon sequestration.
