24F WWF - Closing the Loop - Green jobs and formalisation of the plastic waste value chain in Kenya

About this project

Having progressed under DMDP Waste to Value, this project takes the next important step to connect the three “streams” in one loop to support EPR legislation. By connecting key actors and data in the three streams, the project generates increased income for waste collectors and enables traceability and accountability of EPR. Mr. Green Africa sells fair, recycled plastic by creating value out of discarded plastic waste. Their business model is based around collecting, sorting and processing waste into high-value post-consumer recyclate, which is then used as raw material by plastic converters and manufacturers. It is sold to plastic converters willing to pay an additional price for fair recycled plastic. An innovative in-house app is used to standardize prices for plastic (ensuring fair trade) and guarantee the traceability of plastic from the point of sourcing to the manufacture of post-consumer recyclate. The app will provide real time data of plastic collection to support the traceability of the EPR system. MGA’s distribution network in Mombasa established under DMDP project will be leveraged and expanded along the coast to ensure increased and seamless transfer of materials from collectors to pre-processing hubs and to MGA’s factory.
