About this project
The NOURISH project will explore the potential for the Oysternut value chain to improve climate adaptation, livelihoods and nutritional outcomes for vulnerable refugee and host community households in Uganda. NOURISH will build a triple impact (people, planet, profit) value chain of Oysternuts (ON). ON is a liana about 30m long that climbs around trees in Uganda and Tanzania and is not commercialised yet. There is barely a market for the nut and no large-scale commercial products developed. Fiber Foods Uganda’s (FF Ug) will develop a product and carbon neutral value chain around it: a production line, traceability and quality control systems, training for farmers and processors. The value chain should be social, with fair prices and wages and involvement of women, and sustainable, in an agroforestry system with low carbon footprint. In the first year, the value chain will be developed with 50 selected farmers. A first production hub will be selected within the refugee settlement where women process the nuts to add value to the raw seeds. The business model for FF UG is buying the processed ON based ingredient for EUR 1.5/kg and selling it for EUR 3.75/kg at the local market and to FF NL for EUR 12.5/kg on the export market (EU). ON is drought tolerant, low input, gender sensitive, and circular.
