About this project
The project goal is to establish a social and economically sustainable material value chain based on the collection, management, and recycling of both ‘ocean-bound’ and ‘land-based’ waste and plastic in particular. The project is powered by the informal sector and is located in coastal peri-urban communities around, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Ocean plastic waste will be collected with a floating water barrier developed by one of the commercial partners. The project will establish a value chain for producing big bags using recycled polypropylene (rPP) from 2 sources: 1) inland rPP collected by the informal waste sector, and 2) ocean-bound rPP gathered via barrier. The project aims to demonstrate a value chain/business case so efficient that the final market price of a certified rPP big bag: 1) supports improved livelihood for value chain collectors, 2) sustains continuous barrier operations, and 3) still remains attractive to selected end users.
