About this project

The project aims to enhance climate resilience and inclusive economic development in Hanang District, by establishing reliable access to clean water through decentralised, solar-powered water supply systems. The project targets four villages, with a focus on underserved communities. It supports climate adaptation by reducing reliance on unreliable rainfall and degraded infrastructure and strengthens WASH systems. The initiative also advances gender equity, small-scale livelihoods, and public-private collaboration. The business case foresees a public-private partnership where Grundfos provides parts of the water solution technology. Grundfos will pioneer a new market segment in peri-urban and rural micro-utilities, building on similar experience from Ghana. APM, a Tanzanian utility company and Grundfos distributor, serves as the local operator and will install and manage the water systems, charge tariffs for service, and operate a prepaid smart metering model to ensure efficient revenue collection. By project end, APM expects to serve 11,000 people and generate TZS 950 million in revenue with 25% profit margins. The project demonstrates a scalable approach to climate-smart water infrastructure, attractive to both development finance institutions and national policymakers.
