About this project

To support Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in Ethiopia through scaling up advanced geophysics groundwater data collection for development of hydrogeological maps, and institutionalization of electromagnetic geophysics within the Ethiopian Ministry of Water & Energy (MOWE). This project directly targets the core priorities outlined in the National IWRM Programme — addressing institutional capacity gaps, data scarcity, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies into national water management practices. Through the implementation of an advanced electromagnetic (EM) survey in critical water-stressed regions of Ethiopia, the project will generate the data and capacity needed to support parallel groundwater management and water supply initiatives across the country. Key outputs will include: 1. A high-resolution aerial coverage transient electromagnetic survey of the target region, providing essential insight into aquifer structure, extent, and recharge potential. 2. Generation of a three-dimensional hydrogeological model of the survey area for input to NIWRM decision-making and sustainable groundwater management practices. 3. Institutionalization of electromagnetic (EM) geophysics expertise within the MoWE and Addis Ababa University (AAU), supporting long-term integration of geophysics in groundwater planning and fostering sustainable academic and technical partnerships between Danish and Ethiopian Universities.
