About this project

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is one of the beneficiary countries of the Global Shield against Climate Risks – a G7 and V20 global initiative to close the financial protection gap in climate vulnerable developing countries. Since the launch of the Global Shield against Climate Risks at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, the global initiative has commissioned in-country processes in 13 countries and the Pacific region to establish gaps in financial protection related to climate, disaster risk finance and insurance (CDRFI).With the formal onboarding of Pakistan as a Global Shield pathfinder country in 2023, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination nominated the United Nations Development Programme to set up the in-country processes in Pakistan. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, UNDP led the stock taking exercise and in close collaboration with in-country stakeholders, establishing the gaps in financial protection and developing the CDRFI request for support.
